Ways to Increase Data Transmission Speeds & Reliability over your telephone line: First, you must remember that the telephone network was originally desigend for voice traffic, and only recently has the need for faster data transmission over the network evolved. Here is a list of "user controllable" factors that may effect transmission of data over voice telephone lines.
- Use a quality modem. More expensive, name brand v.90 modems usually have better error detection.
- Type and speed of your computer, and the amount of memory (RAM) that is available.
- Any additional device plugged into a single line has the potential to slow down a connection (i.e. additional telephones, and answering machines) can all hinder performance. This can be easily tested by disconnected any additional equipment from the line and plugging your modem in directly. If your connections are better, you have apiece of equipment that is impeding your connection.
- Faulty inside wiring.
- Call waiting and off premise extensions can all impact performance.
